Jacqueline A. Berrien, chairwoman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission )The chairwoman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will speak about social justice at the University of Colorado's Law School tonight.
Jacqueline A. Berrien will speak at 5:30 p.m. in the Wittemyer Courtroom of the Wolf Law Building. The event is sponsored by the Black Law Students Association of CU Law.
President Barack Obama nominated Berrien on July 16, 2009, to a term ending July 1, 2014. In his nomination, he noted that Berrien has spent "her entire career fighting to give a voice to underrepresented communitities to protect our most basic rights."
The EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person's race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetic information.
Prior to her appointment with the EEOC, Berrien worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, where she served as Associate Director-Counsel for five years.
